The Centre, known in full as The Abdullahi Smith Centre for Historical Research, was established in 1983 and named after the late Professor Abdullahi Smith (1920 - 1984), in order to honour the memory of this outstanding scholar and patriot, whose profound contributions to the teaching and research into the history of Nigeria and the neighbouring countries of Africa has, for over three decades, laid the foundation on which the Centre is being built.

The Centre is managed by The ABDULLAHI SMITH CENTRE TRUST - a private, non-profit making, scholarly, trust to promote and advance scientific historical research into the history of the peoples of Nigeria and the rest of Africa, in order to further develop the historical consciousness and knowledge which foster their unity and independence.
